"If you or your parents are immigrants, you are a part of a proud American tradition," she said, calling our "glorious diversity" of faiths, colors and creeds as not a threat to who we are but rather, "it makes us who we are."

She also added, "Don't ever let anyone make you feel like you don't matter, or like you don't have a place in our American story. You do."

The event was to honor school educators all across the nation, which she began last year. The first lady gained a reputation of frequently reminding the youth to give importance in pursuing education.

"I want our young people to know that they matter, that they belong. So don't be afraid, be focused. Be determined. Be hopeful. Be empowered. Empower yourself with good education," the outgoing first lady said.

Obama hosted the 2017 School Counselor of the Year as a part of her Reach Higher Initiative, with one's main goal is to inspire students to pursue post-secondary education whether at a professional training program or a community college. This year's winner was Terri Tchorzynski from the Calhoun Area Career Centre in Battle Creek, Michigan.

A graduate of Harvard Law School like the president, Michelle Obama recalled how her father strived hard hoping that one day his children would go to college and have unimaginable opportunities. She concluded her 21-minute speech with a lingering reminder to "lead by example with hope" and "never fear".

"Being your First Lady has been the greatest honor of my life," she ends her final official speech in tears.

President Obama's final speech was announced to take place on Jan. 10 in Chicago, according to the official page of The White House. The president said the speech will be a "chance to say thank you for this amazing journey" while celebrating the change of the country for the better in the last eight years, and "to offer some thoughts on where we all go from here."
