Alibaba has decided to resort to 'big data' for solving the bane of counterfeit or fake goods that has casted shadow on the e-commerce giant for several years now. The e-commerce company has formed what it called the world's first "Big Data Anti-Counterfeiting Alliance," which has several big brands on the board.

Some of the big brands include the likes of Samsung, Louis Vuitton, and Huawei. Additionally, trade associations, intellectual property experts, and regulators are also part of Alibaba's "big data" initiative for fake goods.

"The most powerful weapon against counterfeiting today is data and analytics, and the only way we can win this war is to unite," Jessie Zheng, Alibaba Group chief platform governance officer, said.

The e-commerce giant also issued an official statement to give a blueprint on how the alliance will work. The statement said it will provide all the alliance members with necessary big data and technical support "in their IP enforcement work, including helping to block, screen and take down infringing listings."

With more than 1 billion product listed on its platforms at any given time, detecting fake products is indeed a major headache for the Jack Ma-founded company. The company said that its built-in monitoring system scans more than 10 million product listings each day.

In the 12 months ending August 2016, Alibaba claimed to have delisted 380 million products and banned 180,000 third-party seller stores across its various online shopping platforms.

Alibaba's ambitious drive against counterfeit goods comes barely a month after its shopping website made a comeback in the US government's "list of notorious counterfeit platforms." Earlier this month, the company took an unprecedented decision by suing two vendors for selling fake Swarovski watches on its online shopping website.
