Mitch McConnell Uses Obama and Guns in Response to Grimes’ Ad Campaign

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell used president Obama and guns to respond to opponent, Alison Lundergan Grimes' ad campaign, in his re-election bid.

On Monday, Grimes released her ad campaign, which showed the Senate candidate shooting skeet while discussing her platform and insisting that she is different from the president.

Additionally, the spot also showed a picture of McConnell holding a rifle over his head while Grimes was saying, "that is not how you hold a gun."

McConnell responded on Tuesday with his own ad that implied how Grimes is indeed similar to Obama.

McConnell's ad showed a White House picture of Obama while shooting skeet at Camp David, and indicating that Grimes is Obama's clone.

In McConnell's spot, it stated in detail that Grimes have twice supported Obama's platforms, including those for Obamacare, war on coal, gun control and Obama's foreign policy.

Polls have consistently placed Grimes behind McConnell partly because the senate minority leader framed his re-election campaign as a race against Obama.

Meanwhile, in a statement released by Grimes' campaign manager Jonathan Hurst, he said that McConnells campaign was "a sign of weakness" and showed how McConnell is concerned about the upcoming elections.

According to University of Virginia's Center for Politics director Larry Sabato, the gun-themes ads will "appeal to partisan voters."

In addition, Sabato said that the spots highlighted the theme of the two candidates.

While Grimes is trying to imply that McConnell is not suited for the needs of Kentucky, McConnell is suggesting that Grimes is an Obama clone who will prioritize the president over Kentucky.

Grimes' ad was released after several McConnell ads indicated that if Grimes were elected, she would always agree with Obama's resolution, even those that would not be beneficial for Kentucky.
