House GOPs Gearing In Support Of Obama’s Syrian Rebel Training Against ISIL

(Photo : REUTERS) “I think we’re back, as Republicans, to realizing that there is real danger in the world and that shutting down the government isn’t appropriate when you’re dealing with issues of life and death," said Rep. Peter King (R.-N.Y.), referring to conservative reaction to Obama's Syrian rebel training strategy against the ISIL.

The Republican-led House is working to pass legislation in support of President Obama's drive to train and provide arms to moderate Syrian rebels as part of efforts to combat the Islamic State (ISIL) threat in the Middle East.

The continued growth of ISIL, which threatens not only the Middle East but also Europe, the West and Asia among others, has alarmed the international community.

It has resulted in Washington's GOP-controlled House to push for U.S. intervention in Iraq and Syria, a move which is atypical for the conservative party.

Although the training and arms program involves large commitment with potentially damaging risks, Rep. Tom Cole (R-Ok.) acknowledged that in order to destroy ISIL, authorization must be given to the president.

On Monday, Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) said GOP colleagues who had previously supported non-intervening strategies in foreign disputes appeared to have retreated.

"It's hard for them to argue to do nothing, and they know it," Kinzinger said.

For instance, Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), known for being a staunch non-interventionist, said he wants to "destroy" ISIL.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and House Speaker John Boehner (R-Oh.) are reportedly collaborating on a cross-chamber piece that would ensure unity among party ranks and facilitate the ratification of the measure.

The bill, intended only as a short-term strategy to deal with the ISIL threat, will be part of a larger amendment that covers funding for a number of federal agencies. The entire amendment is likely to be passed on Wednesday, said House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Ca.).

Based on the legislation, the Pentagon will be required to alert Congressional leaders and applicable committees at least 15 days before the any training begins or U.S. weapons change hands. Through the course of the program, the Pentagon shall submit an update report every 90 days, according to a House Armed Services board adviser.

While it is not clear how long the legislation would allow for the training and arming of the Syrian rebels, House leaders say full deliberations on the extent of U.S. military involvement will not take place until after the November elections.

It must be noted that the current legislation on Obama's strategy against the ISIL definitively restricts the deployment of U.S. troops in Iraq or Syria.
