XDA Developers has discovered that both OnePlus and Meizu are tweaking their CPU performance in order to have good benchmark scores.

The mobile software development community revealed on its report that OnePlus was using cheats to achieve a higher score on benchmarks. In addition, the increase in score was minimal, and the need to indulge in fraudulent practices for such a little perquisite was questionable.

As for Meizu, XDA-Developers uncovered that the manufacturer has changed its big cores to activate whenever benchmarks are detected. The big cores are expected to change on anytime the device requires additional processing might; however Pro 6 appears to have been set to keep the big cores idle until benchmarks have started running.

OnePlus has admitted on the XDA-Developers discovery, assuring that the company will stop cheating on its benchmarks scores.

“In order to give users a better user experience in resource intensive apps and games, especially graphically intensive ones, we implemented certain mechanisms in the community and Nougat builds to trigger the processor to run more aggressively. The trigger process for benchmarking apps will not be present in upcoming OxygenOS builds on the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T,” the company's spokesperson told XDA.

This is not the first time that a mobile device is cheating on its benchmark scores. Included in the benchmark cheating scenario are Samsung, HTC, Sony, and LG. However, these tech giants have eventually stopped the practice.

The report also serves as a warning to all buyers not to take benchmark scores as the final serving of specs on a smartphone's performance.
