New reports said the U.S. holds the record of having the dirtiest power plants in the world and emitting more pollutants than any other country.

Environment America Research & Policy Center released a report concluding that U.S. power plants defeated the combined numbers of industrial power plants for the title of "dirtiest power plants" based on figures from 2012.

The report released September 19 was titled "America's Dirtiest Power Plants: Polluter on a Global Scale," and it's in line with the U.N. Climate Summit 2014 on September 23 in New York. It showed the U.S. has increased the global warming problem through their power plants emissions.

The report claims that American power plants contributed over six percent of greenhouse gases worldwide in 2012. The figure is more than any country's power plants except for China.

Globally, it added more carbon dioxide to the environment compare to India, Russia, Japan and any other countries and again, except China.

"It's time to stop ignoring our largest global warming polluter, and start a major transition to clean power," said Elizabeth Ouzts, who works for Environment America Research and Policy Center.

The report highlighted how much pollution these power plants emit. Coal-fired power plants contributed 74 percent of U.S. power plant pollution in 2012.

The report also recommended the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) strengthen, finalize and implement the Clean Power Plan. It recommends the EPA start enforcing standards as soon as possible, promptly get rid of older, polluting plants and proceed to renewable energy resources.

Persuading the U.S. Congress to pass a national renewable energy standard is also included in the report's recommendation.
