Countries that took a stand against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) are implementing safeguards to prevent nationals from joining the group's cause and from subsequently returning home to carry out the same acts, according to The Globe and Mail.

In recent months, the ISIL has more than doubled in size to about 20,000 to 31,500 as it experienced a surge in support due to its successes in Iraq and Syria and through efforts to recruit jihadists, according to CIA spokesperson Ryan Trapani.

The extremist group posted an online video on Monday where ISIL spokesperson Abu Mohammed al-Adnani called on jihadists to kill disbelievers from a coalition of countries against the Islamic State, including citizens from France, Europe and Australia.

In France, close to a thousand nationals were reported to have travelled to the Middle East to join the fighting in the region.

French authorities initially focused efforts on identifying these citizens so they can take necessary action when they return. Now, the government has stepped up efforts to nip the issue in the bud.

Citizens suspected of having plans to join the ISIL are detained and investigated. To date, more than 329 probes are underway.

Last week, legislators voted on a counter-terrorism bill that would allow authorities to seize passports of suspected jihadists to prevent them leaving the country. Lawmakers also voted on a bill to facilitate the shutdown of ISIL recruitment websites.

France has also started to conduct air strikes against the terrorist group in Iraq.

Likewise, the British government has already taken steps to make sure that ISIL recruitment is prevented.

Website content is already being censored while social media sites such as YouTube have been granted a "super flagger" status which means videos containing terrorist-related content are quickly removed and prohibited from access.

On Monday, British officials said they were considering a bill to prevent jihadists from returning and implement monitoring procedures if they do.

Additionally, a law that would allow police to confiscate passports of those suspected of joining the terrorist group is also being considered.

According to defense sources cited by The Telegraph, the country is also prepared to carry out air strikes in Iraq after a meeting between Prime Minister David Cameron and U.S. President Barack Obama.

In Australia, where it has already been called against by the ISIL thrice, government officials are taking the issue seriously.

Last week, the government announced it had conducted air raids in Brisbane and Sydney and foiled plans of ISIL supporters to behead a citizen as part of efforts to carry out "demonstration killings."

Aside from the 600 military advisers and eight fighter jets dedicated to combat the terrorist threat, Australia has implemented safety measures to ensure the preservation of peace and safety of its people.

Security guidelines have been revamped at airports including biometric screenings which are expected to be implemented late next year. Counter-terrorism laws are also being discussed in parliament.

Citizens will have to bear with the new security measures along with the inconveniences it subsequently brings, said Prime Minister Tony Abbott.
