(Photo : Jorge Silva) Chinese President Xi Jinping wraps up his four-nation tour with bilateral agreements supporting his "One Belt and One Road" economic initiative.

President Ma Ying-jeou of Taiwan rebuffed Chinese President Xi Jinping's suggestion that both countries should enter a "one country, two systems" form of rule.

After more than six decades of hostility between China and Taiwan, Xi proposed that both sides adopt a system similar to that in Hong Kong, a proposal that Taiwan has sharply rejected.

In an interview with Al Jazeera, Ma said that the "one country, two systems" concept was originally made for Taiwan, not Hong Kong. But according to Ma, Taiwan profusely rejected the concept.

"If the system is good, then we believe it should be 'one country, one system'," Ma said.

In addition, the Taiwanese president said they do not want to wage war against China, but instead, hopes to lessen the possibility of war.

Ma's remarks followed the statement by President Xi on Friday, saying that "no secessionist activity will be tolerated," warning Taiwan of its desire for independence.

According to the Chinese president, Beijing wants a peaceful reunification with Taiwan using the "one country, two systems" concept that was done when Hong Kong returned to Chinese sovereignty, after being a colony of Britain.

Xi's remarks came during a time when thousands of Hong Kong residents are protesting against Beijing's insistence on enforcing its own wishes against democratic election issues.

The majority of Taiwanese have been closely monitoring the events, and president Ma announced a "stronger democracy" for Taiwan.

According to Ma, Taiwan is the only region in China, where democracy is still practiced, adding that the events in Hong Kong is causing concern among the citizens of Taiwan.

Taiwan's support of Hong Kong's fight or democracy and its rejection of Xi's proposal look to be a hindrance on China's aim of reunification.

During a meeting in Beijing attended by Taiwanese delegation, Xi said the concept of "one country, two systems" is the answer to a peaceful unification of the country.

Since the 1940's civil war, Taiwan and Mainland China have been ruled separately, when nationalists under Chiang Kai-shek left Mao Tse-Tung's Communists and set-up its own government in Taipei.
