A recently conducted poll released Saturday revealed that Democratic Senate candidate Rep. Bruce Braley is behind Republican candidate Joni Ernst in Iowa's senate race.

The survey, conducted by the Des Moines Register, showed that state senator Ernst is up six points over Braley at 44 percent to 38 percent.

The survey also revealed that Ernst had a four-to-one lead among rural voters.

In addition, it showed that the majority of the respondents thought Braley's comments about Republican Senator Chuck Grassley's background in farming was "problematic."

Meanwhile, 12 percent of the surveyed voters said they have yet to decide on the candidate they will support.

Previous polls revealed that both candidates were tied.

In July, an NBC / Marist poll showed that each candidate had a 43 percent of support from likely voters, while 14 percent remain undecided.

According  Jennifer Jacobs of the Des Moines Register, the race is still not guaranteed, but the poll revealed a trend among likely voters.

In addition, Braley's decline in the polls can be linked to U.S. President Barack Obama's unpopularity in Iowa.

However, Braley is also to be blamed for his dip in the survey, particularly his remark against Grassley, which voters perceived as "besmirching farmers."

Ernst is supported by 58 percent of all rural voters, while Braley only got the support of 15 percent.

Braley's controversial remark was made last winter during a fund raiser, where he said Grassley was a "farmer and not a lawyer."

Although Braley apologized to Grassley about his comment, the gaffe led the media outlet Politico to tag Braley's campaign as "the number 1 worst campaign in 2014."

Meanwhile, Ernst, a lieutenant Colonel in the National Guard of Iowa, is gaining more popularity among voters, with her rhetoric about the threat of Obamacare and the weak economy.

The Des Moines Register poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.2 percent, and was done among  546 likely voters in Iowa from September 21 to 24.
