The Taiwanese government recently announced an investigation on China's smartphone developer company Xiaomi Inc. over cyber security concerns.

The government plans to investigate whether the Chinese company poses a cyber-security threat to the country and will decide within three months.

The investigation comes after recent reports of some of Xiaomi's phones that automatically send user information to its servers in Beijing.

The feature could potentially lead to security breaches.

In August, Xiaomi publicly apologized for a cloud feature that collects address book information from users without permission, after a Finnish-based security company discovered and confirmed the evidence.

Taiwan's National Communications Commission Director Gin-Shian Lou responded that it would take action of the situation by performing its own tests and will release the results soon.

Foreign governments are becoming more and more cautious of potential cyber security threats from China.

The world's second largest economy has been subjected to accusations of industrial and cyber espionage in recent months.

In Hong Kong, Xiaomi was accused of retrieving user text messages in its servers, a claim the company had denied.

Under the laws of mainland China, tech firms that use servers on Chinese soil to store user data are obliged to conform to any requests made by the government.

Companies such as Google had decided not to establish any servers on Chinese soil. Apple Inc., on the other hand, had recently begun storing user data on its own servers for the first time.
