Middle-Earth Shadow of Mordor

Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor has been highly reviewed by most outlets, praising its Batman: Arkham-esque combat, large amount of things to do and Sauron's Army. In the over-hyped 2014 games market, it is surprising Warner Bros subsidiary Monolith Productions was able to live up to the hype.

One of the more questionable aspects of Shadow of Mordor is the Ultra graphics setting on PC. Normally, Ultra settings offer the best experience graphically to the user, but Monolith takes it to a whole new level, with the game needing 6GB of VRAM to run Ultra settings.

For those that don't know, 6GB of VRAM is extremely rare. Users would need to have two GPUs with 3GB of VRAM and use SLI support to run the Ultra settings. Think of PCs in the range of around $3000 and you will have something capable of running it.

This is terrible for most of the power users in the PC gaming community, who are used to running Ultra graphics without issue. Now, even users who have a single Nvidia Titan or GTX 980 will not be able to run Shadow of Mordor on Ultra.

How much of a difference do these Ultra textures make? Check out the video to see for yourself.

In our view, there is no way an extra 3GB of VRAM is needed to make graphics less than 5 percent better than on High graphics settings. We peg it up to Monolith not compressing assets properly and being lazy with graphic moderation, making it almost impossible for anyone to even try out textures on Ultra settings.
