A 28-year-old U.S. Army veteran and Wisconsin native left his home, went to the Middle East and joined Kurdish forces, all to fight the Islamic State militants head on.

After serving in the army, Jordan Matson worked a third shift job, focused on online gaming and was troubled about his future.

Everything changed for Matson after he heard about the fighting in the Middle East and the suffering of Kurdish children.

Now, Matson is in a Syrian hospital, recovering from wounds he sustained after fighting the ISIS.

In an interview with the USA Today, Matson said he couldn't stand to just stay at home while children were suffering.

"I got sick of giving online sympathy. Five minutes of lip service does nothing. These people are fighting for their homes, for everything they have," he said.

During the interview, he said he met another American fighter who joined in the fight against the militants before they were attacked, but he refused to disclose the identity of the person.

According to Matson, he couldn't wait for the U.S. to do something about the war, so he took matters into his own hands.

After learning about the struggle in Syria, he found Kurdish contacts online, who could help him get to the country, and accept him in their group.

Matson, who is critical of the U.S. Governments foreign strategy, said that it wasn't until James Foley was beheaded did the government begin to take action.

He added that polls were more important for the government than the value of human life.

Matson now uses the name Sedar. According to the Army Human Resources Command, he served in the U.S. Army from May 2006 to November 2007, attaining a private first class rank.

The former army vet said he searched online for groups who were fighting the Islamic State militants, and he found the Kurdish People's Protection Unit (YPG), and when he learned on Facebook that they were not a terrorist group, he contacted them.

According to Matson, though the group doesn't pay him, they treat him like family.
