Macedonian authorities report the man apparently arrived at Skopje from London last October 2. This man was taken to a hospital Thursday and died after just seven hours.

Dr. Jovanka Kostovska from Macedonia's commission for infectious diseases said the man's symptoms included extreme vomiting, a high fever and some internal bleeding. He noted that the man's condition deteriorated at an unusual fast rate.

Dr. Kostovska told local media these are definite symptoms of the Ebola virus. Tests were immediately performed in Frankfurt, Germany to confirm the presence of the Ebola virus.

A Macedonian government spokesman told local news media, however, that the deceased man's other British companion said they haven't travelled to Africa or any country affected by Ebola.

The hotel staff and the ambulance crew that ferried the staff were placed in quarantine to prevent further spread of suspected Ebola infection. A Macedonian foreign ministry spokesman condirmed a British man has died in a local hospital in Skopje.

The foreign ministry said the government is fully aware of the case and is doing everything it can to investigate with utmost urgency.

To date, all victims of the Ebola outbreak either lived or visited Africa. A Spanish nurse, Teresa Romero, is the first person in Europe to have contracted the virus outside the African continent.

After an autopsy, the Briton's cause of death will be released after 48 hours. This will become the first case of the Ebola virus in a U.K. citizen if the diagnosis is proven correct.
