It was warmer than usual every month so far this year and the Earth is on a hot streak to break heat records.

The global average temperatures last month made September 2014 the hottest in records maintained by NASA. Likewise, the last six months were also the warmest middle half of the year ever recorded.

NASA's announcement on Sunday came hard on the heels of what was collectively the warmest August on record, which confirms an unfortunate trend in global warming.

Records date back to 1880, though evidences show the new records haven't been matched since then.

New data from NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) show this September was some 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit above the average for the 1951 to 1980 benchmarks. That made it the warmest September ever recorded from GISS data, beating the previous record from 2005.

The unreasonably warm days began in April when atmospheric carbon dioxide reached 400 parts per million, a record that is the highest in 800,000 years.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's National Climatic Data Center, which keeps a separate record from NASA, ranked April 2014 as the warmest April on record. It was then followed by the warmest May, June and August. July wasn't quite hot as it only ranked fourth on the list.

The NCDC will release its records for September later this week but so far through August, its data ranked 2014 the third warmest year globally.

The burst of warmth for this year was linked to global warming, especially for ocean temperatures. Steaming sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific Ocean is also triggering an emerging El Niño.

El Niño may spark a massive heat release by the end of the year until 2015. Such a phenomenon is often related to hot years since El Niño has a significant warming impact on ocean temperatures.

This bolsters a chance 2014 will be in the front-runner position for the hottest year ever measured.
