Mars One Martian Colony Impossible, says MIT Study

Mars can kill you.

It's certainly no surprise that private firms such as Mars One are now finding ways to make a voyage to Mars possible.

This because of enthusiasm over Martian exploration created by missions such as NASA's MAVEN probe and Curiosity rover, along with the space race between Boeing and SpaceX to land the first humans on the Red Planet.

New research from MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) shows humans won't be able to survive Martian conditions based on plans of Mars One, a non-profit organization based in the Netherlands that intends to establish a permanent human colony on Mars by 2025.

Around 200,000 would-be space tourists or Martian residents signed-up to be part of the Mars One colony.

Mars One trips are one-way with no return journey. Mars One plans to transport astronauts to start building the first colony on Mars and to send more people after the first colony has been established.

These Martian colonists will most likely die in just 68 days, said Sydney Do, a doctoral candidate in aeronautics and astronautics after carefully studying Mars One's plans.

Mars One was founded in 2012. The non-profit company hopes to begin a human colony on Mars by 2025.

Researchers noted the Mars One plan hopes to transport plants from Earth as a sustainable food source. These plants, however, will emit more unnecessary oxygen into the Martian atmosphere. This over abundance in oxygen can cause the colonists to die from asphyxiation.

Currently, there is no technology that can remove some of the oxygen in the Martian atmosphere.

Mars One organizers also thought about extracting potable water from Martian soil by heating. This type of technology doesn't exist either, he said.

Mars One estimates US$4.5 billion will be needed to transport astronauts to Mars. There's still no spacecraft technology that is this cheap, making Mars One's 2025 Martian colony unrealistic.
