Google Unveils Nexus Player

It's been a busy day for Google (GOOG) with four announcements: the Nexus 6, Nexus 9, Android Lollipop and Nexus Player. But not to be lost among the others, the overshadowed game/entertainment console Nexus Player is still a big step for the company.

The Nexus Player will be the first device to run Android TV, Google's new OS developed specifically for larger televisions. It's built on the Material Design language Google unveiled at I/O in June - with hints of the older Google TV OS inside.

Google has made the Nexus Player minimal, like the Nexus Q, Google's previous attempt that failed. It is an interesting design, accompanied by two controllers. One, a traditional remote, will feature voice controls, and the other is a gaming controller.

Both will work wirelessly with the Nexus Player - Google did not specify if these will come separate or together in the package. It it expected to each come for $20 to $50 extra, on top of the cost for the Nexus Player.

Android TV has a large library of movies and TV shows to watch, alongside apps like Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus and more, to keep the entertainment levels high.

Gaming is also a big part of Android TV, similar to Amazon's (AMZN) strategy. Users can play mobile games on a TV screen, if that appeals to them. It is an interesting proposition, but until Google fills the store with actual TV sized games, it is a little lackluster.

Price information and a release date were not made available.
