At Apple Inc.'s (AAPL) event in Cupertino, Calif., the company has announced a new 27-inch iMac with Retina Display. The new 27-inch iMac will feature an unprecedented 5K display, with a 67% higher resolution than 4K, the previous standard for display technology.

There has been a lot of work put into the new 27-inch iMac to make the retina display possible. Apple has created a timing controller to allow four times the bandwidth through the screen at any given point, and added a better LED lighting to make the screen brighter.

Energy efficiency has also played a big factor in the 27-inch iMac. Apple has made the best display on the planet, but now the new iMac is three times more energy efficient than the last. An amazing feat in engineering for Apple.

Internally, the 27-inch iMac with Retina Display will feature the same 3.5GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, AMD Radeon R9 M290X GPU and 1TB fusion drive.

For all of this new display power, Apple is offering the new 27-inch iMac with Retina Display for $2499. Apple will keep the 21.5-inch and 27-inch non-retina iMac's in the store, for $1099 and $1799, respectively.

Apple will start selling the 5K iMac later this week, running OS X Yosemite - the latest OS X update coming this week.
