A gunman attacked Canada's parliament on Wednesday, with gunfire erupting near a room where Prime Minister Stephen Harper was speaking, and a soldier was fatally shot at a nearby war memorial, jolting the Canadian capital.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said his government is not intimated by any terrorist threat following a bloody Ottawa shooting Wednesday morning killing a national guard and the perpetrator.

Canada is a known supporter of the U.S.-led campaign against the Islamic state rebels making the country a natural target for retaliation.

In his public television address, Harper said the incident is the second "ISIL-inspired terrorist" attack in three days. The first one occurred Monday in Quebec when the assailant ran over two police that killed one and injured another.

The suspect in the Ottawa shootout is also a recent Islam convert, Harper added.

Authorities did not offer further details on the shooting incident aside from the identity of the attacker, Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, 32. Court records show he was previously apprehended for assault, illegal drug and weapons dealing, and robbery.

Ongoing investigations will reveal more of the terrorist and possible accomplices, said Harper.

Prior to the incident, Zehaf-Bibeau, who was dressed in black and was wearing a scarf to cover his face, gunned down a soldier guarding the National War Memorial point-black using a rifle, witness Tony Zobyl recounted.. The victim was later identified as Corporal Nathan Cirillo.

People began scrambling out of the vicinity while others took cover inside the buildings as armed soldiers positioned themselves. The nearby University of Ottawa went on lockdown to protect the students. At least three people sustained injuries from the incident.

Sergeant-At-Arms Kevin Vickers, 58, was able to shoot the attacker after several gun fires outside the caucus room for Members of the Parliament, according to Canadian justice minister Peter MacKay.

U.S. President Barrack Obama condemned the act, tagging it as "outrageous."  He also advised all stakeholders to remain vigilant, while the U.S. Embassy remained on lockdown during the incident.

Harper vowed to keep Canada safe from terrorist threats and that the incident is seen as the country's means in strengthening the fight against rebels.
