(Photo : Facebook) Facebook has announced its anonymous chat room app, called Rooms, earlier today.

Facebook (FB) has announced a new application built for message-rooms called "Rooms." The new app uses QR codes to create rooms anonymously - the creator of the room can share this QR code online, through email or even print it out for certain areas.

Rooms is the anonymous application Facebook was talking about a few weeks ago, after people started asking for a place to be private within Facebook's walled garden. Rooms will have a simplistic interface and will allow people to have conversations with others on a specific topic.

Facebook wants this to be used in a way where people will find the room and not know exactly who is it in, similar to apps like Yik Yak and Rumr. The difference will be the topics and way of getting into the rooms - instead of location like Yik Yak uses, QR codes will make sure only the people you want in your room will be allowed in.

The creator of a room has admin privileges to change the color and topic. This goes deeper than normal Facebook customization, allowing users to change the "Like/Liked" button to whatever fits their topic.

Josh Miller, the head of the project at Facebook, said Rooms is inspired by some of the early days on the Web where chat-rooms and forums were king, and no social network was available to instantly find friends. It has had some fine tuning for the mobile era, with the main focus on photos.

Users will be able to set whatever identity they want when they enter the room. Rooms could be for friends, for a certain discussion or for a certain location, depending on where the creator posts the QR code.

Facebook is rolling out Rooms today on iOS - no Android version available right now.
