Tribal Members Seek Answers For Why Teen Opened Fire at Washington School

The interdependent Tulalip Indian Reservation has raised questions regarding the shooting at Marysville-Pilchuck High School located at Washington Puget Sound last Friday as the young gunman, who killed one and injured four others, is said to be part of the tribe.

The student killed was identified as Zoe Galasso and died instantly at the scene while the four others are said to be still in critical condition; two of them are reportedly cousins of the shooter. The shooter, identified as Jaylen Fryberg, 14, was said to have come from a prominent family.

According to state Senator and tribe member John McCoy, they want to find out what triggered Fryberg as all the information they have gathered states that the shooter was a happy-go-lucky and normal kid and quite a popular freshman at the school.

The shooting occurred at the school cafeteria Friday and was only brought to a stop after a teacher reportedly intervened when Fryberg paused to reload his gun.

The teacher was said to have been traumatized after the event and is assessing the situation privately. It was not immediately clear if the student accidentally shot himself during the struggle with the teacher or if he committed suicide.

Authorities were able to recover a .40 caliber handgun at the scene of the shooting.

Friends told investigators that the young shooter had previously been posting troubling messages on his social media accounts, most of which were in reference to a girl.

According to the school's Superintendent, Becky Berg, school officials plan on hosting a meeting for staff members, students, and parents in order to help the community better understand the incident.

The investigation is still underway as authorities seek out answers as to why Fryberg decided to open fire at the school and his reasons for targeting his own friends in the attack.
