Mystery of Bizarre Fallstreak Cloud Over Australia Solved

A bizarre rainbow cloud called a "Fallstreak Hole" seen over Victoria, Australia has left witnesses dumbfounded and bewildered.

Considered as a rare cloud formation, a Fallstreak Hole occurs when water droplets inside clouds become frozen; turn into ice crystals and begin to fall. The hole is formed when a gap between clouds allows sunshine to shine through and reflect among the ice crystals. This refraction produces a rainbow.

Also known as a "cloud punch hole," Fallstreak Hole are often described this way since they create a spherical gap in the sky. This meteorological event was witnessed last Monday around 1 P.M. local time.

The clouds that surround the Fallstreak Hole span some three miles. This phenomenon is often caused when airplanes flying over clouds produce a reaction from certain conditions. Researchers have deduced that aircraft engines or wings create these special conditions that lead to fallstreak cloud formations.

Splashes of color called iridescence similar to the color prism seen on soap bubbles accompany a Fallstreak Hole. Michael Efron from the Bureau of Meteorology in Australia said iridescence occurs when water droplets in the clouds collect light.

The news of the Fallstreak Hole spread like wildfire across the internet and witnesses posted photos and stories of this very rare event. Some even called this a "Rapture Cloud."

This natural event happens everywhere in the world as long as high altitude clouds are present, and temperatures and light conditions provide the perfect setting for these cloud formations to be witnessed from the ground.
