'Interstellar' On Track For Weekend Box Office Win Versus 'Big Hero 6'

Interstellar, the science fiction film, grossed about $1.4 million in the Wednesday box office against Disney film's latest movie Big Hero 6.  

According to Variety, the film is expected to pull $58 million over the weekend despite huge competition with the Disney film. Both films reportedly cost $165 million to produce.

The movie is directed by Christopher Nolan who is also behind box office hits' 2010's Inception, which opened with $68 million, and 2012's The Dark Knight Rises with $160.9 million.

It also features big names in Hollywood like Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathway, Michael Caine, and Jessica Chastain.

The film is about a group of explorers who will travel through a wormhole searching for a new place for people to live in. Movie critics praised the movie for its breathtaking visuals and realistic effects, which are emphasized when watching in Imax theaters.

The science fiction movie is distributed by Paramount Pictures domestically in 249 theaters, 42 of which are in Imax theaters. Warner Bros. will distribute it internationally in 3,500 locations, 369 of which are in Imax theaters.

Big Hero 6 will be closely behind as a Disney superhero-comedy film, according to critics. The movie is also expected to gross around the same amount as Interstellar over the weekend.

The family-friendly movie was inspired by Marvel Comics, a first since Disney acquired it five years ago. The story will revolve around the plus-sized inflatable robot called Baymax and prodigy Hiro Hamada who will form a group of high-tech heroes.

The cast includes Ryan Potter, Scott Adsit and Jamie Chung among others. The Disney movie received positive comments and has an 88 percent rating from Rotten Tomatoes.
