Social media sites including Twitter and Facebook have been blocked in mainland China, but Twitter still plans to capitalize on the greater China region and feels it could be a great source for potential advertisers.

Although it's blocked, China-based companies still use Facebook to connect customers in other countries with certain products like mobile phones. Twitter could look to capitalize on the same concept.

According to TechCrunch, over 75 percent of all Twitter's nearly 300 million users are located outside of the U.S., but only one-third of the company's revenue have come internationally. Because of this, Twitter recently has been expanding its international ad programs to great lengths. Just a couple months ago the company added 12 new countries in Europe, Middle East and Africa to its advertising network, and it appears to have now added China to that list.

"With half of all Internet, mobile and social media users worldwide in Asia today, we see many opportunities across the region," A representative from told TechCrunch. "APAC is the growth engine for the company and we are expanding into more markets to reach new users, partners & advertisers."

Peter Greenberger, director of sales at a Singapore-based Twitter office, will reportedly run the new upcoming Hong Kong office. In addition, Twitter also plans to soon open an office in Jakarta, Indonesia.
