Green Fireball Tears Through Texas Night Sky

A fireball blazing across the Texas night sky Saturday night, November 8 around 8 p.m. local time, is believed to have been a meteor. It apparently triggered a loud sonic boom that shook homes in central Texas.

The National Weather Service said it couldn't confirm any findings of meteorite debris this early.  Its regional bureau received numerous reports from residents that saw the fireball in the night sky.

NWS also confirmed the fireball was spotted at about 8:45 p.m. and was seen in different areas in Texas spanning from Corpus Christi to Lubbock, an area about 500 miles long.

Local reports said some witnesses described the fireball as a big, bright shooting star while others insisted it looked like two objects trailing a greenish blue trail. The Maverick County Sheriff Department also reported the ground shook after the bolide or fireball struck the Earth at around 8:45 p.m.

A strong explosion caused by a sonic boom was consistent with reports from fireball witnesses that called the NWS. Texas witnesses took to social networks like Twitter and Facebook to report about the fireball.

Footage of the fireball was uploaded on YouTube by a motorist taken by his in-car dash camera. The video shows a brilliant shimmering green fireball with a drooping tail.

Bolides could be meteors, meteorites or space debris burning up as they enter the Earth's atmosphere.. Fireballs are those with a magnitude of -14, which is brighter than the full moon.
