Chromecast Update Comes In Time For Holiday Season

Google is pushing out a holiday update to the Chromecast, bringing a few new movie apps and 10 new games to the USB streaming device.

Showtime Anytime is the biggest new app coming to the Chromecast, offering shows "Homeland" and "Dexter" on-demand. Users need to have a cable subscription in order to use the Internet TV service.

Starz Play is another subscription service tied into cable plans, offering "The Witness" and "Outlander" on-demand. It is a shame these services tie into a cable subscription, for anyone who wants to watch Internet-only TV.

Other than movies and TV shows, Google is also stepping up Chromecast gaming content. To kick it off, the Chromecast will be loaded with 10 new family-friendly games, including Monopoly Dash, Connect Four Quads and Just Dance Now.

Using the mobile or tablet a controller, users will be able to take turns on these games, offering a sort of family-friendly experience on the Chromecast. Google has not discussed adding more Android games to the Chromecast.

The Chromecast is still one of the best selling technology devices in 2014 and has held the #1 spot on Amazon.com for a few months. Amazon even released its own Fire TV Stick a few weeks ago, to hopefully knock Google's Chromecast off the top spot.

Google recently updated the Chromecast with dual-band WiFi and a few other small iterations, to make the USB stick more receptive to paired devices. Big labels like Twitch.TV recently jumped on board the supported services, making the USB stick even more useful.

Chromecast is not the only device Google is working on to win the TV space, announcing Android TV in summer at Google I/O. There has not been a lot of activity in this area, Google announced the Nexus Player as the first set-top box running Android TV last month, alongside the Nexus 9 and Nexus 6.
