Ubisoft Criticized For Assassin's Creed Unity's Poor Performance, Bugs

Ubisoft has been criticized for its poor rollout of Assassin's Creed Unity on all platforms, alongside poor business practices.

Video game developer Ubisoft is under a lot of heat from the gaming community over the poor optimization of "Assassin's Creed Unity," and a review embargo set one day after the launch.

Even though plenty of reviews have scored Assassin's Creed Unity relatively high, it is not worthy of any game-of-the-year awards, with scores ranging from 6 to 8 out of 10.

This sort of score usually means the plot, characters or graphics are poor on the title, but in Unity's case, it is due to poor optimization and business model.

To put optimization into a gameplay sense, Unity currently has a plethora of glitches, including NPC (non-playable characters) sinking into the floor. Also, high-graphics settings cause lag and frame-rate drops, even on high-end machines.

For a triple-A title, supposedly in the works for three years, this is unacceptable among the gaming community. Texture quality and graphical fidelity are both impressive, but it is obvious Ubisoft did not test the game on multiple machines to see if it can run without frame-rate drops.

Frame-rate is a major gameplay aspect and most game studios run extensive tests to make sure the game can stick to 60fps at all times. Ubisoft got into hot water when it announced that "Assassin's Creed Unity" would only run at 30fps, but it cannot even manage that most of the time.

Bad optimization is not the only issue with "Assassin's Creed Unity," as the game suffers from Ubisoft nickel and diming the users. It litters the game with micro-transactions, making customers who just spent $59 pay more for upgrades in gear and other in-game customizations.

Micro-transactions are hated in the gaming community, and even more so in single-player titles. EA has been burned time and time again for its decisions when it comes to micro-transactions and DLC, but Ubisoft has managed to get by unscathed, until now.

"Assassin's Creed Unity" is still a large expansive experience, but until Ubisoft fixes many of the in-game issues, it is an unplayable mess for most customers who have purchased it.
