With space exploration venturing towards Mars and beyond, a new project called the "Lunar Mission One" aims to send a robotic probe carrying a drilling tool to the Moon. Lunar Missions Ltd., the company behind this project, has already begun a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.

The first part of the project aims to raise US$950,000 through Kickstarter. The company believe this project pays homage to the July 20, 1969 Apollo Moon landing. This project intends to send a probe armed with a drill and a suite of scientific instruments to the Moon in 2024.

The large drill will take lunar soil samples from a depth ranging from 65 feet  to 330 feet. The probe will then analyze these soil samples using scientific instruments similar to those aboard the Rosetta probe's Philae lander.

The results of the analysis will be sent back to Earth. Researchers said these results will offer new insights and information about the Moon's beginnings and evolution. It could also lead to real evidence proving the Moon's subsurface has the capability to hold water to support a lunar base in the near future.

The real mission of this lunar space probe, however, is to carry time capsules from Earth that will be buried in the Moon. These capsules will contain human DNA such as human hair and digital archives of human society and culture such as videos, music, documents and images.

This will serve as a public archive about the history of humankind. It will also be a record of human life in general that details Earth's biodiversity in a special database. These digital memory boxes will be specially made and can last billions of years.

The Kickstarter project offers anyone that wants to have their DNA and digital imprint taken to the Moon for a price. To be part of this historic lunar archive, simply support the lunar campaign via Lunar Missions Ltd. Kickstarter project.
