Tesla, BMW Discussing Battery, Charging Partnership

(Photo : Reuters) Tesla Motors and BMW are looking to partner up and work on batteries and charging tech together.

Tesla Motors and BMW are in talks to create a partnership that will allow them to share ideas and patents for charging, batteries and other electric car features.

The partnership would put two of the biggest electric car manufacturers together. The BMW i3 recently received the first electric car to win the "Green Car" award, beating competitors from Honda, Hyundai, Toyota, Ford and General Motors.

The deal would put Tesla Motors and BMW far ahead of other electric car manufacturers, who may not get any details on the new battery and charging concepts, shared between the two companies.

Tesla Motors has always gone its own way when it comes to manufacturing. The company creates its own charging stations - recently licensed to other electric car manufacturers - and makes all adjustments to the stations work with the Tesla cars.

This is unlike other electric car manufacturers who simply use the old gas stations. Tesla is also interested in technology and software in the car, while BMW and others seem to be keen on keeping the experience the same as in a normal gas powered car.

Tesla has very few electric cars on the market at the moment and none of them are cheap. CEO Elon Musk is committed to developing a full line of Tesla cars for families and just one person, but the car manufacturer is taking its time to launch new ranges.

Partnerships in the car industry have not always worked out. However, Tesla has been reaching out to car manufacturers around the world, to set up electric stations and offer patents out for free.

The deal has not been confirmed by either side yet. Musk claims Tesla is still negotiating with BMW - if successful we should hear about the partnership before the end of 2015.
