PS4 Sells 15 Million Units Worldwide, Xbox One Hits 8 Million

Sony's PS4 has passed 18.5 million sales, another milestone for the most popular next-gen console.

Reports say Microsoft's Xbox One is starting to catch up to Sony's PS4 after almost a year on top, but new numbers reported show Sony is still way ahead.

VGChartz, a research firm specializing in video games, claims the PS4 has sold 15.1 million units since launch. This is a lot higher than the 8 million Microsoft has flogged in the same time period.

Sony did have an explosive start with the PS4, but Microsoft reportedly sold over 500,000 last week, showing the potential massive growth of the console this holiday season.

PS4 owners have bought over 57 million games for the console, while Xbox One owners have only bought 32 million games. Both are not great numbers, as the numbers amount to 3-4 games per average customer.

There has not been many killer games released in 2014, Destiny received criticism due to its poor story and definite future DLC, Watch Dogs was not the blockbuster hacking game many were hoping for, and other games like "Titanfall" and "Assassin's Creed Unity" came with separate issues.

Nintendo's Wii U has sold 7.6 million units since launch, putting it just behind the Xbox One. "Mario Kart 8" and "Super Smash Bros" is making the Wii U a popular option in the holiday season, but it still lags behind the other two consoles.

On the positive side, Nintendo's 3DS continues to dominate the handheld market, selling 46.7 million units so far, to the PS Vita's 9.1 million sales.

Microsoft has brought the momentum back to the Xbox One with two price drops, the first taking $100 off the price and removing the Kinectl; the second taking an extra $50 off the price to match the PS4.

It looks like this has hit the sweet spot with customers, especially in the U.S. where the Xbox has always been the more notable brand. In Europe and Japan, the PS4 continues to top sales' charts.

"Grand Theft Auto 5" appears to be the best seller this month for PS4 and Xbox One, selling over 3 million copies this week alone. Those are insane numbers for Rockstar, who already sold over 30 million copies on Xbox 360 and PS3.

Plenty of big name titles are awaiting launch in early 2015, including "Tom Clancy's The Division," "The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt," "Evolve" and "The Order: 1886."
