Chernobyl Captured on Film By Drone

chernobyl

(Photo : Reuters) Chernobyl is still off limits for most, almost 30 years after the nuclear disaster the town still has pockets of radiation. One drone has captured the abandoned buildings in perfect detail.

Chernobyl has become globally recognized as the first major nuclear disaster zone to not come from a war. In 1986, the nuclear reactor at the Chernobyl plant failed, leading to a mass evacuation of the town.

Unlike other nuclear sites like Hiroshima, Chernobyl has been abandoned by the country. The pockets of radiation in the area still make it a questionable place to live and several survivors from Chernobyl have ended up with ill children.

Postcards from Pripyat, Chernobyl from Danny Cooke on Vimeo.

To show the true abandonment of the entire town, freelance filmmaker Danny Cooke sent a drone into the town to take a better look. The results are quite marveling, showing the complete absence of people from a town that was once full.

Most packed up whatever was valuable and left, leaving things like children's books and cars. Ukraine, for the most part, has left the town as it was in 1986, not venturing to remove the buildings.

Some iconic buildings in Chernobyl include the Ferris wheel, seen in various films and video games regarding Chernobyl. Various buildings stand above the growing trees in the area, showing the remnants of the Ukraine government in the Soviet Union.

Even though small efforts have been made to at least make the area useful, Ukraine has shown no interest in rebuilding Chernobyl, happy to leave it as a desolate ruin.
