In the wake of the Ferguson protests, U.S. President Barack Obama announced his intention to ask for US$263-million budget from the Congress in order to train and equip police officials with body cameras.

Obama confirmed such plans in order to limit the racial profiling issue that sparked when a white police official named Darren Wilson shot a black teenager identified as Michael Brown.

According to reports, Obama also talked with elected officials and faith leaders to determine how communities and law enforcement agencies can work hand in hand to strengthen their cooperation all over the country.

Also, a White House official noted that Obama will be announcing the creation of the "21st century policing" that will be examining the promotion of effective crime reduction while gaining the trust of the public.

Two co-chairs were assigned to spearhead the project, namely, Philadelphia police commissioner Charles Ramsey and George Mason University professor Laurie Robinson.

The talks came after a grand jury decided not to indict Wilson resulting to days of violent protests, setting on fire police vehicles and even looting in a few stores. Tear gas was also used by the police officials to disperse the crowds and six demonstrators were arrested on Sunday, according to reports.

Shortly after the grand jury's announcement, a White House official released a statement saying the trust between law enforcement agencies and U.S. citizens has disintegrated. The situation can undermine the legitimacy of the criminal justice system and the public safety, the official added.

Amid the controversial reports, another topic has surfaced regarding the practice of the U.S. military in sending surplus gears and vehicles to local police officials. This has been cleared by White House press secretary Josh Earnest, saying that these distributions are only to improve public safety.
