Madrid Bullfighting Festival Canceled After Three Matadors Gored

Three of Madrid's prestigious bullfighters were injured in the ring on Tuesday, forcing organizers to cancel the event.

The bullfight was due to be the 12th in the popular San Isidro Festival but was stopped after two matadors were gored and a third was thrown in the air by a bull.

The upset took place at the Las Ventas bullring which is reputed to be the most important sporting ring of its kind in the world.

All three bullfighters were taken to a hospital for treatment with two being discharged and a third remaining hospitalized but in stable condition.

David Mora was the bullfighter to suffer the worst injuries after a black, half-ton bull named Deslio clipped him on a pass then rammed his horn deep into Mora's leg before flipping him in the air. The somersault was described as "horrific, shocking, chilling" by Spanish newspaper El Pais.

Mora's injuries are serious but not considered life-threatening, according to reports.

Bullfighters Antonio Nazare and Jimenez Fortes were hospitalized after being skewered by a second bull in the knee, leg, and pelvis, respectively.

Both matadors were released from the hospital on Wednesday, officials stated.

This is the first time in 35 years that a bullfight has been cancelled due to injuries inflicted on matadors by bulls. The last time the event was put on hold was 1979 when two bullfights were suspended after matadors were gored by bulls.

Spain hosts around 2,000 bullfights per year despite global outcry regarding the barbaric nature of the sport.

However, recently the number of bullfights held in the nation have been dropping with Catalonia and the Canary Islands being the most recent to ban the 4,000-year-old tradition.

Despite outrage exhibited by animal rights groups, Spain's congress granted bullfighting cultural heritage status in 2013 in order to prevent the sport from further bans.
