China to Crack Down on Video Games, Animation

The Chinese government is looking to crack down on animation and gaming websites that offer user-generated comments without filters.

The Chinese government has started to relax regulations on video games and animation, unbanning video game consoles from the country and loosening up on Internet restrictions.

But it looks like Minister of Culture Li Qiang is not happy with some animation and gaming websites that cross the line, allowing unfilter user-generated comments to run rampant.

Sites offering these unfilter chat sections will now be subject to investigation and removal. China did not give specifics on if live streaming sites and MMOs - which have built in chat functionality - need some time of filter.

The move is to stop the Internet becoming a place for anti-government speech to be promoted. China has been on top of it when it comes to social networks, companies like Tencent and Sina Weibo regularly work with the government to censor some topics.

Other illegal content like pornography is another topic China will remove, if spotted. Animation will most likely stretch into video and other media, including anime, a popular genre in China.

China has already rounded up 11 gaming websites who are under investigation and will most likely be pulled, unless the provider can offer an adequate update to remove content deemed anti-government and illegal.

Video games in China already get assessed by a board before entering the country, to make sure it fits the Chinese audience. In the past this has lead to anti-Chinese shooters not being available in the country, or getting modified to suit the audience.

It is unclear how the Chinese government will work to stop these "illegal websites", but it is clear the government is not happy with the way some sites are operating.
