Jayson Werth, Major League Baseball (MLB) outfielder for the Washington Nationals has been sentenced to 10 days in jail for reckless driving.

The 35-year old Illinois native was sentenced to time in jail by a judge in Fairfax County, Va. on Friday.

The sentence came as a penalty for an incident that occurred last July 6 where a state trooper had recorded Werth driving 105 miles per hour (mph), about 50 miles over the speed limit. He was driving his Porsche on Interstate 495.

The offense occurred around 9:40 in the morning on a Sunday.

In a report made by the Washington Post, they said that Werth testified during the trial that didn't know how fast he was going, but believed at the time that it was less than 100 mph.

"It's possible I exceeded 90 miles per hour," Werth said in court.

The Fairfax County General District Court Judge Penney Azcarate countered though, telling Werth that "speed kills."

"495 is not a racetrack," Azcarate told Werth before the sentence was given.

During the trial, state trooper P.L. Green testified that he followed Werth for about half a mile on the beltway at 105 miles an hour efore pulling him over on the exit to the George Washington Parkway.

Werth's attorney, Rod Leffler, tried to have the case tossed out as he questioned the reliability of the trooper's pacing of Werth. However, it was unsuccessful. He also asked the judge to take into account how Sunday traffic is light.

He has also stated that he will likely be appealing the judge's decision.

Reporter Julie Carey of NBC Washington shares her two cents on the matter and says that Werth should be serving five days of his sentence instead.

Werth has three seasons left on a US $126 million, seven-year contract with the Nationals. Last season, he batted .292 with 16 home runs and 82 RBIs in 147 games.
