A Mexican man once considered the fattest man in the world died at the age of 48 on Monday.

Manuel Uribe was admitted to the Hospital Universitario in Monterrey earlier this month with an irregular heartbeat but despite the best efforts of doctors he died today.

At one time, Uribe weighed a record 1,230 pounds which put him in the 2006 Guinness Book of world records. However, since then the man had slimmed down to 867 pounds, losing his title as the world's heaviest human being.

According to reports, Uribe managed to shed the 400 plus pounds by eating a healthy diet and taking part in minimal exercise.

The multiple health issues related to Uribe's enormous weight had left him bedridden for the past nine years.

His marriage to long-time girlfriend Claudia Solis in 2008 was one of the few times that Uribe had left his home in recent years and since 2002 he was confined primarily to his bed, relying on his mother and friends to feed and clean him.

Despite his dramatic weight loss, Uribe's obesity put strain on his relationships causing his wife Claudia Solis to eventually ask for a divorce, Uribe later stated.

As an adolescent, Uribe weighed more than 250 pounds, but since 1992 his weight started to balloon causing him to put on significantly more bulk.

In 2007, Uribe told ABC News: 'I had an obesity problem for many years, a very significant one. I was gaining and gaining weight. I was on every diet you can imagine.'

According to authorities, Uribe had to be taken to the hospital on May 2 with a crane and with the help of emergency and civil defense authorities.

Once there, an abnormal heartbeat was detected but Uribe reportedly suffered from liver problems as well.

Doctors have not yet confirmed the cause of death.
