Panda Triplets Back In Mother's Arms At Safari Park In China

Giant panda Juxiao wrapped her arms around her triplet babies -- much like humans do -- in a touching reunion at China's Chimelong Safari Park.

The 3-and-half month old babies, two boys and a girl, are the world's only surviving panda triplets. Safari keepers said the triplets are now teething and walking.

When the triplets were shown on their two-month birthday at the park, their mother only managed to hold a baby at a time. Safari keepers stepped in to rotate the triplets.

The keepers raised the bear cubs while away from the mother panda. But that changed in the past two weeks as Juxiao has been looking after two of the triplets at a time. Panda rearing experts said she was able to exercise full control as a parent.

The safari park general manager told media a lot of preparations were made for the reunion.

Onlookers held their breath when the triplets were placed near their mother. An observer said one of the triplets was very nervous and stayed near the gate.

Mother Juxiao took a second to realize her babies were in the pen and then she got up close and personal with them. The park manager said the reunion was a success after Juxiao held the babies like humans do -- a scene that moved onlookers.

Juxiao gave birth to the three on July 29, but the park only reported what they initially called a "miracle" birth for fear the triplets might not make it. The zoo at the time said panda offsprings have an "extremely high" mortality rate.

Experts said single and twin births are common among the bears but triplets are rare.

They explained that in their natural habitat, a mother panda can rarely raise more than one cub and so multiple births usually lead to the deaths of two babies.
