YouTube Launches GIF Creator

GIF may be seen as one of the worst image formats, but on the Web it has flourished, due to its short-video capabilities.

YouTube wants to make it easier to create GIFs from videos and users will now be able to automatically create a GIF image on the video.

To create the GIF, the user needs to go to 'Share' and then 'GIF'. Users will be able to choose 3 seconds of the video and add both top text and bottom text.

Once made, the user can download the GIF and link it anywhere. Fans of Reddit, Tumblr and other image boards will be happy with this change-considering the amount of GIFs regularly added to the site.

The amount of GIF creators currently available show the interest in this type of feature. YouTube has quite a lot of video available for users to test it on, but channels have to allow GIFs to be made on the channel.

PBS Idea Channel and Epic Rap Battles seem to have activated the GIF creator, but the vast majority of YouTube channels have not activated the feature. YouTube did not announced the new GIF feature, meaning it might just be a beta feature.

YouTube has been updating its service with new features over the past six months. The most recent change added Music Key, a new music subscription service for $7.99. It will allow YouTube fans to listen to music in the background with no ads.

There has been rumors of YouTube launching a video subscription service to compete directly with Netflix and Amazon Prime, but these rumors have been swirling for over a year.

YouTube continues to be the dominant video service, but new video services like Facebook and Vessel are interested in poaching talent, to release exclusive videos on other sites first. YouTube has reacted to this news with new contracts for some channels.
