PlayStation Plus Saves Gamers $1,300 Annually, Sort Of

PlayStation Plus could save gamers up to $1,300 every year, according to UK publication Push Square.

There is more to PlayStation Plus than the ability to play games online. According to Push Square, gamers may be able to save $1,300 a year on free games.

Sony releases free games for PlayStation Plus every month in an effort to keep gamers interested in the system. Considering most releases on PS3 and PS4 cost $60, it is a useful feature to have for gamers who cannot afford games every month.

On top of the apparent $1,300 in savings, PlayStation Plus owners are able to partake in giveaways, promotional sales, online play and sharing. The service is continuing to grow as Sony builds more PlayStation Plus centric features.

Push Square's numbers are the top-end of potential savings, meaning the subscriber would have to own a PS4, PS3 and PS Vita to get the full value. However, owning only one console should still save $400 annually if all of the games are downloaded.

The data also calculates all the games at the highest price at launch, meaning no price drops were added to the potential saving. Even though there are fewer price drops on console compared to PC, users can pick up games for less than $60 after a month on sale, usually.

Microsoft offers a similar subscription service in the form of Xbox Live. Users are able to play online and get two free games a month on Xbox 360. Sony has shown less resilience to adding price-saving features than Microsoft for its premium service.

Most games on the free monthly list have been out for a good few months, making publishers less worried about sales loss. It is also a great way for new gamers to try out an older title and see if they enjoy the world.
