Foursquare has finally delivered an iPad version of its discovery app, after years of users waiting for the option to switch to tablet.

"Since the new Foursquare came out a few months ago, people have been telling us that they do a lot of their planning on their iPad, and they want a version of Foursquare designed just for it." the team said in a blog post.

The new iPad app takes advantage of the extra space, offering a full map view and more information on the left side. Users will be able to discover a variety of different local places on the app.

"We've also added a brand new section: all the top picks in your area. Using all of Foursquare's data, it suggests places that are newly popular, up-and-coming, and local mainstays. It also has suggestions for travel destinations; from must-see sights to hidden gems in most of the largest cities and neighborhoods around the world."

It has been a few months since Foursquare announced the location service would be split. The discovery side would remain Foursquare, check-ins would be done through a new app, called Swarm.

Foursquare has not documented the performance of both apps individually. It does allow users who did not want to check-in to only use Foursquare, and users who didn't care about discovery to only use Swarm, offering more ease-of-use.

The new discovery service works of previously visited or viewed places, allowing Foursquare to tailor the discovery directly to what users enjoy. This new data is allowing Foursquare to start making money from the service, by offering detailed analytics on user preferences.
