Popularity of 'The Interview' Surges In North Korea

North Korea is often seen as a country segregated from the rest of the world, and for the most part this is true, but black markets exist allowing residents to acquire things from outside.

One of the hottest items residents are asking for, is "The Interview", the comedy involving the assassination of Kim Jong-Un, which has been the topic of major debate over the past month.

Somehow, the news got to North Korean residents, and they are now buying "The Interview" for $50, which is  x10 over the normal rate for a South Korean DVD. In response, the North Korean government is pushing to make sure the movie does not enter the country.

The average monthly wage in North Korea (including non-official work) comes to $30-40, meaning residents are paying over a month's wage to see "The Interview" on DVD.

Considering Kim Jong-Un's godly status among North Koreans, having a U.S. film mocking the leader may cause irrefutable harm to his reputation. Jong-Un's death at the end would also be a shock to North Korean residents, who are told he is immortal.

"The Interview" is already available in the rest of the world, in limited cinemas or on various distribution services. On YouTube, the film has been watched over 100 million times, just in the U.S. alone.

Even though critics have panned the film for quite crass humor and a lack of direction, audiences continue to watch it. Some have pointed to the popularity as a way of fighting back terrorist censorship.

The U.S. government is currently considering the position of North Korea in the Sony Pictures attack, shutting down the internal system for a week and stealing 100TB of data - later uploaded online.

The Obama Administration has pushed to put North Korea back on the state-terrorist list, even though security experts continue to question the validity of North Korea's involvement in the attack.

North Korea responded to claims it was behind the attack by calling President Obama "a monkey", and saying it would bomb The White House, if the U.S. does not work with North Korea to find the real attacker.
