Apple Adds 14-Day Digital Return Policy For iTunes In E.U.

iTunes store

Apple has added a 14-day return policy for digital downloads on iTunes.

Apple has updated its terms and conditions regarding returns in the E.U., following a new policy in Europe focused on digital apps and games.

iOS and Mac OS X users will be able to return digital copies of music and apps in a 14-day time window. The return is void if the user deliberately downloads the media, forfeiting their right to cancellation.

The new E.U. policy on apps and games ensures users are able to cancel payments for products they do not want, and also know the full description of the product before buying.

It will force Apple and Google to make sure app developers adhere to new rules in Europe, or face punishments.

Terms and conditions in other regions, like the U.S., will go unchanged, meaning as soon as user's accept the payment it is sealed. Apple is under no obligation in other regions to add the 14-day returns, and it will most likely continue business as usual.

The new update will arrive first in France, Germany and the U.K. All E.U. states will receive the update in the near future.

The E.U. has not been passive when it comes to digital media, and has been particularly aggressive against U.S. companies in the past few years. Between attacking Google and making sure digital stores adhere to more rules, Europe is starting to become a much stricter market.

That is not bad for the customer though, in Europe users now get detailed descriptions, and are able to make sure any media downloaded was bought by them. It would be nice to see the same rules applied in the U.S., to protect customers.
