Chinese telecom giant Huawei Technologies Co.,, Ltd. recently announced the deployment of its enterprise eLTE solution by Spanish telecom network provider, IB-RED, in the Balearic Islands.

Huawei's enterprise eLTE solution includes a 4G Ultra-wideband wireless network to meet the growing demands of tourists visiting the islands for Internet access, Voice over IP (VOIP) and multimedia services.

It uses a single eNodeB to cover 15 to 25 kilometers and supports a downlink data rate of up to 100Mbps.

IB-RED, a company established in 2007, had already rolled out the new eLTE networks in the islands of Majorca, Ibiza and Cabrera. The Spanish telecom company initially used WiMAX equipment to provide network connectivity before turning to Huawei.

"We are pleased to work with Huawei and have been impressed by the eLTE solution's high-performance devices and quality services." said Alberto Navarro, CEO of IB-RED.

"The eLTE network on Majorca now provides a downlink data rate 50 times that of the previous WiMAX network, ensuring both visitors and residents can enjoy stable high-speed access and unlimited download service anytime, anywhere on the island,"

Reports say IB-RED plans to further deploy new eLTE networks in the remaining islands of Menorca and Formentera.

Huawei, one of the largest telecom equipment makers in the world, has been focusing heavily on research and development for networking technologies. It invested US$8 million in the U.K's University of Surrey to test 5G networks on campus.

Last month, the Chinese giant also announced plans to work with Russia's mobile phone operator MegaFon to develop 5G networks for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
