FCC Will Vote on Broadband Rules in February

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has held off a net neutrality vote for most of 2014 after the hybrid net neutrality plan failed to interest parties on either side of the debate.

FCC spokesperson Kim Hart confirmed to The Washington Post on Friday that a vote will be held on Feb. 26, but did not detail the proposal being voted on. The big question is whether FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler will go far enough with regulations for broadband companies. The hybrid plan apparently left cracks broadband companies could exploit, to create fast-lanes.

Google, Microsoft, Netflix and other tech companies have weighed in on the conversation, claiming Title II reclassification under 'common carrier' would prevent broadband companies from exploiting the neutrality on the internet. However, Republicans and telecom companies argue that broadband is different from utilities like water, electricity and telephone, due to the service broadband companies provide.

The debate could change the U.S. Internet scene forever, as broadband companies argue innovation will stop if reclassification happens, and Internet companies argue if broadband companies set up fast-lanes it will remove the tech startups from the U.S.

Wheeler has said he doesn't want typical Title II reclassification for broadband companies, but a mixture of regulation should help to ease the tide.

It is still unclear what the FCC will be voting on, whether it will be further measures to protect the internet, or simply a reclassification. These unknown factors make it all the more difficult for the public to trust the FCC's judgment calls, especially when it recently "lost" 600,000 pro-net neutrality comments.
