Dish Network launches Sling TV

(Photo : Reuters) Dish Network has announced Sling TV, a new Web-TV service with 10 channels for $20 per month.

Dish Network has announced a new Web TV service, named Sling TV, and it looks to be the first step to a full internet TV service to replace cable.

Sling TV costs $20 and comes with two $5 premium genre packages. Dish is aiming the new service at the younger demographic, and wants Sling TV to go alongside a Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Instant Video subscription.

For $20, subscribers are able to view ABC Family, Adult Swim, Cartoon Network, CNN, Disney Channel, ESPN, ESPN2, Food Network, HGTV, Travel Channel, TBS and TNT.

This is quite the selection of channels, especially for sports fans. ESPN has rarely featured its main channel on the internet, forcing customers to go through expensive routes to get the program.

The two $5 genre channels include Kids and News, but Dish did not go into detail on the channels available in the packages.

Users will be able to watch Sling TV on a variety of platforms, including iOS, Android, Roku TV, Amazon Fire TV, Fire Stick, LG smart TVs and Samsung smart TVs.

Sling TV doesn't have everything we would have liked from a $20 service, AMC, Comedy Central and a few other TV channels. HBO is also missing, but we would expect this considering HBO is launching its own streaming service this year.

It also incorporates advertising into the revenue model, forcing users to pay and watch ads. This may be normal for a typical TV service, but for an internet TV service with subscription it is odd.

However, it is clear, Dish has to make enough revenue to keep programmers happy, or the channels will simply be pulled off Sling TV.

Dish has not given a time when Sling TV will be available, claiming it is "coming soon." It also looks like a U.S. only service for the time being, not surprising, considering Dish has zero presence in Europe and Asia.

2015 looks to be the year TV companies work and launch streaming alternatives to classic cable and satellite TV, with CBS already launching 'All Access'.
