Samsung's Lackluster CES Points To More Stand-Alone Press Events

(Photo : Reuters) Samsung has been surprisingly quiet at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this year.

Samsung has never been a company to be quiet at events, but at the Consumer Electronics Show 2015 (CES) in Las Vegas, audiences were disappointed when the biggest announcement at the event was SHUD TVs.

The Inquirer claims journalists stood for two hours in queues to an event that revealed a TV and kitchen appliances.

Samsung stayed silent on the subject of phones, tablets and wearables. It is unlikely the South Korean electronics giant will hold any more events in the next three days either, since Jan. 6 to Jan. 9 is typically the time people hit the event floor.

The new SUHD standard is big for TV providers, offering sharper and richer color from a UHD display, but realistically a television doesn't generate the same excitement as a smartphone or even a Samsung tablet.

Smart home was also not a topic Samsung went over heavily, despite acquiring SmartThings for $200 million last year. It felt like a complete tone down of last year, when Michael Bay stormed off the stage and Samsung was announcing electronic after electronic.

Does this mean Samsung is pulling back on events and hype? Not likely, but Samsung is starting to move to its own press-events, rather than launching everything at CES or MWC.

Holding its own press conferences, Samsung is able to generate more media attention, since all the focus for the day will be on that event. It should allow Samsung to launch products with more buzz and attention, compared to launching at CES where products are drowned by the overwhelming amount of launches.

Samsung is not the only one holding off from tablets and smartphones, HTC and Sony have had little presence at this year's CES.
