Powerful Start-up to Allow Customers Design New Creatures on Computer and Print the DNA

A new DNA start-up will allow customer to tinker with genetic codes of plants and animals and even design new creatures on a computer. Then, the DNA is printed quickly, accurately, and cheaply.

The vision for DNA tinkering belongs to Austen Heinz and Cambrian Genomics. Apart from experimenting and printing the DNA, you can even make the new creature if you wish.

"Anyone in the world that has a few dollars can make a creature, and that changes the game," Heinz said. "And that creates a whole new world."

In his makeshift laboratory in San Francisco, Heinz and his synthetic biology company use lasers to create custom DNA for major pharmaceutical companies.

Their misson is to "democratize creation" with minimal to no regulation. The concept frightens bioethicists while enthralling Silicon Valley venture capitalists.

Utilising machinery and technology they have built over the years, Cambrian has made the process of editing DNA less costly. The process is also made cheaper and faster.

"It is the most powerful technology humans have ever created," Heinz said. "Hydrogen bombs can destroy whole planets, but this is a technology that can create planets. This is the greatest human achievement of all time - the ability to read and write life, because that's who we are."

Apart from the creation aspect of it though, the technology could also be used for superficial means like printing desired eye and hair colors.

There is also the potential for creating creatures that have only been present in science fiction. Heinz points out that creating a chicken as big as a building could be beneficial for those studying genetics.

The applications for Cambrian's technology also extends to other start-up companies such as Petomics, who are currently making a probiotic for cats and dogs that makes their feces smell like bananas.

Heinz won't stop there. He seeks to create thousands more start-ups in the same way.

His ambitions also include replacing lost limbs, fighting viruses, developing alternatives to antibiotics and maybe even printing DNA on Mars.
