In an action-filled match which left fans biting their nails in suspense, the US went head-to-head with Ghana in the FIFA World Cup, taking home the win with a 2-1 score on Monday.

Just 32 seconds into the match, Clint Dempsey, the forward for the American team, scored the first goal, causing U.S. fans to go wild.

In the 82nd minute, Andre Ayew tied the score for Ghana, after an exceptional back-heel pass from Asamoah Gyan, who had eliminated the U.S. four years ago.

American fans were out for blood this time around after the Ghana Black Stars had eliminated the team from the last two Cups.

However, it was 90-minutes worth of non-stop action and the suspense didn't let up until the final minutes of the match when 20-year-old John Brooks rose to head in a corner kick from Graham Zusi. Brooks is the first substitute to ever score for the United States in 30 World Cup games over a period of 84 years.

Overcome by the moment, the young defender fell to the field and was unable to move even as teammates and fans celebrated around him.

Brooks was an unexpected addition to the American roster and made his national team debut just last August. The young athlete hadn't scored in any of his four appearances with the team.

Ecstatic, fellow teammates jumped on top of Brooks in a dog pile as supporters in the stands chanted "U-S-A! U-S-A!"

The win leaves the American team well positioned in Group G after Germany trounced Portugal earlier in the day in a 4-0 victory.

The US clinched the win despite experiencing several serious upsets on the field. Among them, striker Jozy Altidore was taken away on a stretcher after straining his left hamstring, and captain Dempsey was momentarily sidelined with a bloody nose from an inadvertent kick to the face - although he was quickly cleared to return to play out the rest of the game.
