Woman Gives Birth an Hour After Discovering Pregnancy

Surprised Baby Mama

(Photo : Screen Cap/NECN) Katherine Kropas, 23, learned only of her pregnancy an hour before giving birth to a baby girl on Tuesday.

A woman from Massachusetts gave birth to a baby girl on Tuesday barely an hour after she discovered that she was pregnant.

A Weymouth town resident, Katherine Kropas, 23, became a first time mother on Tuesday, with less than an hour to prepare.

A US television network reported Kropas sought treatment at South Shore Hospital on Tuesday morning for worsening back pain. Physicians had a hard time tracing the origin of the pain, till they ran an ultrasound test and found out Kropas was with child.

The surprised mother said the doctors took one look and they wheeled her off into labor. She was told that she was having a baby at 10:15 in the evening and the baby was born at 11:06 PM.

Kropas named her healthy baby girl Ellie who tipped the scales at 10 lbs.

The baby birth was an absolutely unexpected bundle of joy for her mother. She told media that she did not go through the usual signs of pregnancy such as swollen feet and morning sickness. She had no inkling at all that she was on the family way.

Kropas added that she and her partner are on birth control and that there was no change in her menstrual cycle. Though she gained weight over the past couple of months, she thought it was due to the holidays.

Ellie may have been a complete surprise, but the new mama said she is prepared to give her barely one-week-old old child a good life. Kropas and her family said they are relieved that the baby was born in good health and they are focused on providing for her needs.

She told media that her family is having a blast with the baby, and taking care of her is only the start.

Hospital officials said Kropas' surprise birth is not that unusual. They told a network that South Shore Hospital has a couple of surprise pregnancies a year.
