Surprise! more than Two New Planets Exist Beyond Pluto

A new study reveals there are at least two undiscovered dwarf planets lurking beyond Pluto.

This data comes from the intensive analysis of space objects beyond Neptune called extreme trans-Neptunian objects (ETNOs) that are supposed to be just random space rocks floating around in space. New analysis, however, show these two unknown objects possess an unusual symmetry.

Since more objects are being discovered in unexpected orbits, scientists are led to believe unseen forces are controlling and changing the distribution of elements found in the ETNO, according to Carlos de la Fuente Marcos from the Complutense University of Madrid.

This phenomenon can be considered a possible explanation for unknown planets beyond the reaches of Neptune and Pluto, says Marcos.

The traditional theory holds that ETNOs should have a semi major axis and an average distance from the sun of 150 Astronomical Units (AUs). One astronomical unit is equal to the distance of the Earth from the sun, which is 93 million miles.

ETNO orbits should also possess an inclination to the solar system plane of almost zero degrees.

Scientists discovered these 13 ETNOS found beyond Pluto are dramatically different as their semi major axes ranges from 150 to 525 AUs and their inclinations average about 20 degrees.

Marcos says the exact number of planets is still unclear however, even though data is limited, the calculations suggest there could be at least two dwarf planets or even more in the solar system.

This study was published in the journal, Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
