Retired Formula One star Michael Schumacher's medical records have been stolen and offered up for sale, the athlete's manager announced Monday.

It is believed that the files were stolen from the hospital in Grenoble, France where the F1 driver was hospitalized following a skiing accident late last year.

The 45-year-old F1 champion suffered a serious head injury in December when he fell and hit the right side of his head against a rock while skiing in Meribel, France.

Following his hospitalization, Schumacher underwent two operations to remove life-threatening blood clots, and then was placed in a medically induced coma. Schumacher was transferred from Grenoble to the University Hospital Lausanne last week after coming out of his coma.

Despite visible improvements, doctors have warned that the road to complete health will be a long one for the champ and it is possible Schumacher may never fully recover.

The managing director of Schumacher's office in Geneva, Sabine Kehm, released a statement saying:

"For several days stolen documents and data are being offered for sale. The offeror claims them to be the medical file of Michael Schumacher."

Although Schumacher's team is unable to verify the authenticity of the documents, a warning was issued against the sale of any supposed medical records:

"We expressly advise that both the purchase and the publication of such documents and data are forbidden. The contents of any medical files are totally private and confidential and must not made available to the public. We will therefore, in every single case, press for criminal charges and damages against any publication of the content or reference to the medical file."

The medical files, which contain details of surgical procedures performed on Schumacher, have reportedly been on sale for several days now and are receiving an offering price of over $65,000.
